New furniture in Switzerland is expensive and slow — four to ten weeks of lead time for quality ranges. Second-hand solves both problems at once, provided you know where to look: the four channels that exist are not equal on price, on risk, or on logistics.
The four second-hand channels in Switzerland
1. Classifieds between private sellers
The largest and cheapest channel — this is where the real bargains are, especially in June and at the end of the year, when simultaneous departures flood the market and push prices down. In exchange: no guarantee, condition impossible to verify before travelling, and above all the logistics are your problem. A 200-franc sofa that requires renting a van, finding two pairs of arms and climbing three floors is no longer a 200-franc sofa.
2. Flea markets and consignment shops
The condition is visible, the choice is real, and you find pieces of character unavailable anywhere else. Prices are higher than classifieds — the curation and the premises have to be paid for — and delivery is rarely included. The right channel for a single piece, not for furnishing a whole home.
3. Retailers' clearance and end-of-line stock
Display models and end-of-line pieces from the big chains: new or near-new with genuine discounts. The choice is random by definition — you find what there is, not what you are looking for.
4. Ex-rental furniture — the category few people know
Furniture rental companies resell the pieces that leave their fleet. It is a particular second-hand profile: furniture chosen from the outset to last (rental wears things out), professionally maintained between contracts, inspected before resale — and sold by a company that delivers. That is what we do with our outlet: design pieces from our fleet, checked by our teams, at reduced prices. One point of transparency: these pieces are sold as seen, with the condition described in each listing — hence the importance of the next section.
What to check before buying second-hand
- Structure before looks. A cover can be cleaned; a warped frame cannot be fixed. Sit, shake, turn it over.
- The honest wear zones: armrests, seats, table edges. Even wear is normal; localised wear often hides a defect.
- Smells — tobacco and damp practically never leave foam.
- Dimensions and access: the piece has to fit through your door, your staircase, your lift. It is the first cause of hurried resales… and therefore of bargains for everyone else.
- The full logistics cost: transport, carrying, assembly. That is what really separates the channels.
Hesitating between second-hand and rental?
The question depends on your horizon. For a short or uncertain stay, renting avoids the whole buy-resell cycle — we set out the maths in our article on rental prices. For a lasting purchase on a controlled budget, second-hand is unbeatable. And the two combine: many of our clients rent the essentials and hunt for the rest.
| Channel | Price | Risk | Delivery |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private classifieds | Lowest | High (unverifiable) | Your problem |
| Flea markets / consignment | Medium | Low (condition visible) | Rarely included |
| Retail clearance | Medium | Low | Depends on retailer |
| Inspected ex-rental | Medium | Low (inspected, described) | By the company |
Frequently asked questions
When is the best time to buy second-hand in Switzerland?
June and the end of the year: the 30 June and 30 September lease deadlines, plus expat departures, flood the second-hand market. Supply explodes, prices drop — it is mechanical.
Is ex-rental furniture heavily worn?
Usually less than you would imagine: it is chosen to withstand rental, maintained between contracts, and withdrawn from the fleet when it no longer meets standards — not when it is worn out. The exact condition is described piece by piece.
Is there a warranty on second-hand furniture?
From private sellers, none. In our outlet, pieces are sold as seen, inspected and described — in line with our terms and conditions. Always read what the seller, whoever they are, writes about the condition.
Do you deliver outlet furniture?
Yes, our own teams deliver — the decisive advantage over private classifieds, where the logistics fall to you.
Can you mix rental and second-hand buying?
It is actually a common strategy: rent the big structural pieces (sofa, bed, table) and hunt for decoration and accents. Controlled budget, home finished within days.
